  • Interested in benchmarking because interested in replacing leveldb to allow reading from other processes, need reliable way to benchmark changes like this.
  • So far been benchmarking using hyperfine, investigating IBD
  • Problem was that IBD takes a long time, wanted faster iteration cycles
  • To support this, using patch adding flag that pauses background download when assumeutxo snapshots loaded
  • Found MDBX outperformed leveldb processing new blocks after snapshot, and outperformed it overall, but leveldb was faster than MDBX processing old blocks
  • Want to figure out why behavior changed between old / new blocks, maybe transactions longer lived previously
  • MDBX is more efficient for reads, less efficient for writes compared to leveldb
  • Also experimented with newer upstream leveldb version and with rocksdb (facebook fork of leveldb)
    • Rocksdb has many more parameters which could be drawback but has option groups to simplify
  • Is database bottleneck for IDB? flamegraph shows
    • 30-40% time spent in CheckTxInputs looking up transaction inputs, so significant
      • especially because leveldb can't handle batch reads, each cache miss is read from disk
    • also large time in background compaction leveldb
      • increasing file size helps this, also implemented other optimization [notes missing]
    • IDB is i/o bound, not cpu bound. main part CPU bound is chacha20
      • i/o bound even though using nvme and syncing between two nodes on localhost
    • Perf impact of flushing is relatively small. only 6.7% samples in flush
  • Also experimented background compaction thread option
  • Want standard benchmarks we can run to test optimizations and database changes, catch bugs earlier like windows XOR regression
  • Maybe there are improvements we can make while keeping leveldb
    • Can upgrade leveldb, revert no longer needed leveldb windows changes. Need to keep memory mapped file changes
    • Maybe can port background compaction thread optimization
  • Would like to resurrect jamesob project nightly benchmarking sync from snapshot, weekly benchmarking sync from genesis
    • Might have caught recent windows XOR regression sooner
  • There is github gist describing new experimental benchmarking infrastructure using hyperfine
    • Doesn't use bitcoin-perf, might be hard to reconcile
  • Would like more systematic way to organize information
    • 5 year old PR porting to LMDB had useful information
  • Discussion about ways to improve performance
    • At extremes or either 0 cache or giant cache, choice of database did not show difference in benchmarks.
    • Leveldb optimized for spinning disks / sequential reads, so could be less relevant today
    • Old but never implemented performance idea: continuous background flushing
      • Hard to reconcile with freshness cutthrough operation, but probably possible
      • Would need to record start and end blocks or cache in database
    • Question about why need cache at all, main reason is freshness cuthrough optimization
      • cutthrough works best if delay writes as long as possible
      • downsides of delaying writes: data loss on crash, no multiple readers
    • Maybe should have different modes depending on whether in IDB or not
      • Same node can be in and out of IDB, e.g. if offline for a month
    • Maybe should change dbcache default size, maybe chosen automatically based on amount of ram, maybe just flush when memory is getting full
    • Maybe could add -fastidb flag to max out cache size, number of verfication threads. Could generalize with multiple presets, old idea
    • One issue switching to LMDB is random writes slow, but sorted writes would be faster
    • One issue MDBX might be not as good prefix compression which per-txout change in 0.15 assumed
      • per-txout change is important for preventing DOS, where could create transactions with lots of outputs, and spend all but one but all stored
